How to Become a Coach with the Santa Clarita Flyers

Coaching with the Flyers is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to our hockey community. But before you can step on the ice, there are a few important requirements every coach, team manager, locker room monitor, board member, and volunteer must complete. these are the standards set by USA Hockey and the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) to keep our players safe and our program in good standing. This page walks you through exactly what you need to do, in the order you should do it.

Per Section 6.4-1 of the CAHA Guidebook, every adult participating in a CAHA or USA Hockey sanctioned activity — in any capacity — must complete the requirements below before participating or being added to a team roster. This applies to:

  • Head coaches and assistant coaches
  • Team managers
  • Locker room monitors
  • Volunteers (in any role)
  • Board members and administrators

All registrations and certifications must be completed using your legal name, and you must appear in the USA Hockey database before you are eligible to participate.

Step-by-Step: What You Need to Complete

Quick-Reference Checklist

Use this as your at-a-glance tracker. You're not eligible to participate until every box is checked. Details for each step will follow on this page.

Work through these in order. Some steps depend on having a USA Hockey confirmation number from Step 1, so don't skip ahead.

Step 1 — USA Hockey Member Registration

Every coach, manager, and volunteer must hold an active USA Hockey registration for the current season. This is your foundation — every other certification ties back to your USA Hockey member number.

Save your confirmation number. You'll need it for the next steps.

Step 2 — USA Hockey Background Screening

Required for all adults working with players. The background screen is valid for two seasons, so if you completed one last year, check your status before re-running it.

Complete or verify your screening here: https://www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen

Step 3 — SafeSport Certification

SafeSport training is required annually — your certification expires every year and must be renewed before the new season begins. The course covers recognizing, responding to, and reporting misconduct, and is non-negotiable for participation.

Take or renew your SafeSport training here: https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining

Step 4 — Age-Specific Modules & Coaching Education Program (CEP)

Coaches only.

USA Hockey requires coaches to complete the age-specific module that matches the level they're coaching, along with the appropriate CEP level. These modules ensure you're teaching age-appropriate skills, drills, and game concepts.

Complete your modules and CEP here: https://www.usahockey.com/coachingcertification

Step 5 — CAHA Anti-Bullying & Inclusion Training

CAHA requires all coaches, managers, and team officials to complete the Anti-Bullying & Inclusion training annually.

Complete your training here: https://caha.respectgroupinc.com

Note: The updated AB&I training module is expected to be available soon. Check the link periodically — we'll also push updates through team communications as soon as the new course is live.

Step 6 — SCAHA Season Pass

CAHA requires all coaches, managers, and team officials to complete the Anti-Bullying & Inclusion training annually.

Complete your training here: https://caha.respectgroupinc.com

Note: The updated AB&I training module is expected to be available soon. Check the link periodically — we'll also push updates through team communications as soon as the new course is live.

Submitting Your Credentials to the Flyers

Once you've completed all required items, submit your confirmation numbers and certificates to the Flyers Coaching Director so we can verify your status in the USA Hockey database and add you to the appropriate team roster.
